What is Gastric Banding?

divider

Gastric banding involves placing a band around the upper portion of the stomach. The band reduces the size of your stomach, which in turn restricts the amount of food you can eat.

Who is it for?

Gastric banding is suitable for those:

Who are obese with Body Mass Index (BMI) over 35
Who have a BMI over 30 with metabolic syndromes such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes

Why Gastric Banding?

Easy to insert
Operative complications are minimal
Non-permanent
Adjustable and reversible

Tightening of the band will be done progressively over many months. Gastric banding works well in motivated patients who can comply with dietary plans and regular exercise.

How is it Performed?

Although this procedure is reversible, the band is meant to be implanted permanently. Most patients who have the band removed find that they regain their weight.
